A "Diet Pill" You Can Trust

Mom always recommended taking your vitamins as nutritional insurance, but following her advice may also help you lose weight. In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, women who regularly popped a multivitamin reported feeling less hungry and having less desire to eat than those who didn't. While the differences were fairly small, regular multi takers did weigh less and had a lower body fat percentage. "Supplements can help you get enough of the micronutrients that control your appetite and the amount of calories you burn off each day," says Angelo Tremblay, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher and professor of physiology and nutrition at Canada's Laval University. "You're more likely to fall short on these essential vitamins and minerals when you're dieting." When shopping for a daily vitamin, look for one that supplies 100 percent of the RDI, or recommended daily intake, of B vitamins (including folate) and vitamins C, D, and E; it should also have at least 200 milligrams of calcium and 18 milligrams of iron.
